A Corporate Blog can help boost traffic & sales for your business as long as it is managed corrctly and appreciative of blog and social media culture.
A corporate or company blog is a fairly new phenomenon for UK businesses but something that can lead to more site traffic, both your blog and main website if the two are linked, and more leads; and more importantly, it looks like it is here to stay.
The main thing to consider is why visitors read your blog or blog ‘posts’ about your business on other blog sites; and how your posts or articles will differ from your regular news and press releases.
Corporate blogs should use a more ‘open’ and honest style of content writing. Whereas your company website news & press releases can be more direct, biased and use dynamic language to promote your products and services, a business blog needs to understand and accept the unwritten rules of social media and blogsphere to fully appreciate the rewards.
Blogs are written in a less formal manner, and must be aware of the importance, not just on pushing information but as a two-way medium whereby readers comments are as important as the content itself.
Lessons can be learnt from the computer company Dell. When they first launched their corporate blog it probably saw the site more as another promotional tool rather than a social media tool that could be used to help offer a different ‘way in’ for customers to Dell. They were initially receiving up to 50% negative comments but since understanding corporate blogging and being more open and honest they now receive 80% positive comments. This was revealed at this year’s SXSW convention in a lecture entitled: The Future of Corporate Blogs.
Like other large corporations, Dell has proactively used their corporate blog to offer readers the chance to have their voice heard, and also to feel like their views and comments are being listened to. Dell has dropped their regular custom service approach to answering questions, and instead have allowed a more open and personal policy whereby any employee of Dell can answer comments and even offer apologies in a more transparent and human way.
Small businesses can a lot from Dell’s corporate blog success
If your company doesn’t already have a corporate blog then now’s the time to consider launching one, but be careful and sensitive to how you are going to use this new medium. In the current economic climate there are more companies looking for fewer leads. Corporate blogging, managed correctly, could give you a higher profile over your closest competitiors.
